India celebrates the Engineers Day on the birthday of Sir Er. Moshagundam Visvesvaraya. Sri Lanka and Tanzania also celebrate their Engineers Day on the 15th of September. Many different countries mark their respective Engineers Day on different other dates, e.g., France – the 3rd of April, Canada in the month of March, Croatia – 2nd March, Bangladesh – 5th May, and so forth.
Sir Er. Visvesvaraya, born 1861, was honored with Bharat Ratna and was also knighted by the Indian British ‘The Knight Commander of the Indian Empire’ medal. Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India. Bharat Ratan award started in the year 1954. Sir Er. Visvesvaraya was awarded Bharat Ratna the following year, in 1955.
Another important nearby date to the Engineers Day is the Vishwakarma Jayanti. It falls just after, on the 17th of September in 2018. Vishwakarma Jayanti is in remembrance to and birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma who is believed to have been the architect and creator of many palaces of the Gods and Goddesses in the ancient times. However, Vishwakarma Jayanti is different to Visvesvaraya Jayanti–Engineers Day.

Today, India enjoys abundance of skilled-unskilled and semi-skilled workers and highly qualified Engineers. India’s population is the 2nd highest and is slated to be the highest around the year 2025 at the current rate.
Government initiatives like ‘Make in India’, green engineering, alternative energy sources, FDI promotion, other direct-indirect Engineering related Sectors, higher allocation of Union-State budget, infrastructure growth, defense technology, SME development, EEPC – Engineering Export Promotion Council etc promote manufacturing and engineering services in India. Indian Engineering institutes like IIT, BITS Pilani, Delhi Engineering College etc are famous internationally.
Many international engineering and related companies are present in India, such as, Siemens, Strabag, Meinhardt, Keller, Boeing etc. IEL, India Engineers Ltd is one of the largest Indian engineering Groups of Indian origin in India.
Some of the manufacturing and engineering related hubs in India are in Neemrana (mainly Japanese), Bawal-Bhiwadi belt, Halol in Gujarat, Sriperumbudur, Nasik, near Bangalore, Jamshedpur, Vijayawada, Ludhiana, Parwanoo, Haldwani etc.
